The Anti-Colonization Society

1833

Many criticized the idea that free Blacks could not live side-by-side with enslaved Blacks and therefore the free Blacks needed to be sent to Liberia where they could start a new life away from the United States. The free Blacks themselves did not wish to be sent away. They felt that it was their hard work that had helped to create this land and they had earned rights and citizenship in the U.S. Many believed that it was the idea of the slaveholders in order to empty the nation of free Blacks and make slavery more secure.
